Cromhouthuis - Museum
For nearly two centuries, the Cromhout family resided in four regal buildings on Amsterdam’s stylish Herengracht canal. Hundreds of years later, the buildings are still as impressive and distinguished as they were in the Golden Age.
As you stroll through the various rooms, you will discover the story of seven generations of the Cromhout family, learning about their influence on Amsterdam and on the city’s cultural and artistic life, about their immense wealth, their faith and the huge number of international contacts they maintained.
The family history, full of ups-and-downs and unexpected turns, is revealed in a truly spectacular setting. The Wunderkammer, an acclaimed stylists’ collective, is responsible for the contemporary and flamboyant design and furnishing of the rooms. For this project, they were given access to the rich collection of the Amsterdam Museum. Unique works of art, pieces of furniture, silver and paintings unite to create a surprising entity and bring the illustrious history of the Cromhout family to life.
Since 1975, the upper floors of the Cromhouthuis have housed the Biblical Museum, where the Bible, art and culture are united. An extraordinary collection, personal stories and a wealth of background information come together to lead you on a journey of discovery through the world of the Bible. The museum also regularly organizes guided tours and activities. And especially for schools and families, there’s the Holiday! In the City exhibition.
