To Amsterdam by train
For almost everyone the train is the fastest, cheapest and simplest way to get from Schiphol into the city.
- Quickly in the centre: the journey to Amsterdam Centraal takes about 15 to 17 minutes, depending on whether you take an Intercity or a Sprinter.
- Frequent, and running at night: during the day there are up to eight trains an hour. Overnight roughly one train an hour keeps running, so even a late landing gets you into town.
- What it costs: a single second-class ticket costs around €6. Children aged 4 to 11 travel cheaply on a Railrunner ticket, and children under 4 travel free.
- Pay with your bank card: the simplest option is to tap in and out with a contactless bank card or phone using OVpay. Do not forget to tap out on arrival, or you will be charged a penalty.
- Or buy in advance: you can also buy a ticket from the yellow machines at Schiphol Plaza, at the ticket desk or online here. Check the current timetable before you set off.
To Amsterdam by bus
If you are staying near the Museumplein or Leidseplein, the bus is often more convenient than the train.
- The Amsterdam Airport Express: bus route 397 leaves from stop B17 at Schiphol Plaza and runs via the Museumplein and Leidseplein to Elandsgracht bus station. The journey takes about 30 minutes.
- Every few minutes: during the day the bus runs every 7 to 15 minutes, roughly between 05:00 and 00:30. At night the N97 night bus takes over, about once an hour.
- What it costs: a single costs around €7 and a return about €12. Buy your ticket online, at the ticket office or from the driver, who takes card payment only.
- Note: this bus does not run to Amsterdam Centraal during the day, so for the main station the train is the better choice.
To Amsterdam by taxi
With a lot of luggage, a group or a late arrival a taxi is often the most relaxed option, though you pay handsomely for it.
- Time and cost: the ride into the centre takes about 25 minutes and usually costs between 50 and 70 euros, depending on traffic and your destination.
- Booking ahead pays off: if you book a taxi online, you know the fare in advance, you are met on arrival and you avoid the queue at the rank.
- Official taxis only: take a taxi solely from the official rank in front of Schiphol Plaza or through an app. Never go with anyone who approaches you inside the terminal.
- Travelling as a group: minibuses are available for five to eight passengers, which works out cheaper per head than two separate taxis.
