Engelse Kerk - Church
The English Reformed Church is one of the oldest church buildings in Amsterdam and stands in the heart of the historic Begijnhof.
- Medieval origins:
- English-language church since 1607: The English-speaking Protestant community has used the church since 1607, giving the building an international role for more than four centuries.
A wealth of history in a small space
Medieval beguines, the Reformation, English Protestants and the Pilgrim Fathers all come together here. The organ, pulpit and historic gravestones make the interior surprisingly rich:
- Flentrop organ: One of the main highlights is the large organ, whose design was inspired by the famous instrument built by Christian Müller in 1753.
- Piet Mondriaan: Particularly remarkable are the carved panels of the pulpit, designed by Piet Mondriaan before he became world-famous for his abstract paintings.
- Pilgrim Fathers: A stained-glass window commemorates the English religious refugees who left the Netherlands for the New World.
- Centuries-old gravestones: The church floor contains historic gravestones of beguines and other Amsterdam residents, including the composer Pietro Antonio Locatelli.
- Historic details: Also look out for the brass lectern dating from 1689, donated by William III and Mary Stuart, as well as the many old church monuments.
